In hydrology and water management, felületszint describes the water surface elevation in rivers, reservoirs, lakes, or coastal zones. It is a key parameter for flood forecasting, navigation, dam operations, and water resource planning, where precise knowledge of the top surface helps inform decisions and risk assessments.

In geology, geology-related engineering, and construction, the term may be used to denote the upper boundary of a geological unit, the top surface of a constructed element, or the surface of a material in processes such as casting or finishing. The exact interpretation can vary by field, but the common idea is the level of the topmost boundary that is accessible or visible.

Measurement and monitoring of felületszint rely on traditional leveling instruments, staff gauges, optical or digital levels, as well as modern techniques such as radar or laser surveying and GNSS-based height data. The term is less common than more general terms like felszín or vízfelület, but appears in contexts emphasizing the elevation of the top surface relative to a reference level.
