Fehérjeátvitel, also known as protein translocation, refers to the process by which proteins are transported across cellular membranes. This is a fundamental mechanism in all living cells, essential for the proper functioning and organization of cellular components. Proteins are synthesized in the cytoplasm by ribosomes, but many need to be delivered to specific organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, chloroplasts, nucleus, or peroxisomes, or secreted outside the cell.

The translocation process often involves the movement of proteins from their site of synthesis to their final destination. There are several distinct pathways for protein translocation, depending on the protein's destination and the type of membrane it needs to cross. For instance, proteins destined for the endoplasmic reticulum are typically translocated co-translationally, meaning they are inserted into the ER membrane while they are still being synthesized by the ribosome. Other proteins may be translocated post-translationally, after their synthesis is complete.

Signal sequences, short amino acid stretches typically located at the N-terminus of a protein, often act as molecular zip codes, directing the protein to the correct membrane or organelle. These signal sequences are recognized by specific receptor proteins on the target membrane, initiating the translocation process. Chaperone proteins also play a crucial role by maintaining the unfolded state of the protein, which is often necessary for its passage through membrane channels called translocons. The energy required for protein translocation is typically supplied by GTP hydrolysis or proton gradients. Errors in protein translocation can lead to various cellular dysfunctions and diseases.
