Fagotsütoosivad refers to the process of phagocytosis, a crucial cellular mechanism in biology. Phagocytosis is a type of endocytosis by which certain types of cells, primarily immune cells like macrophages and neutrophils, engulf and internalize large particles. These particles can include bacteria, viruses, dead or dying cells, and other foreign substances.

The process begins when the phagocytic cell recognizes the target particle. This recognition often involves specific receptors on the cell surface binding to molecules on the particle. Following recognition, the cell's plasma membrane extends pseudopods, which surround and enclose the particle. This engulfment creates a vesicle within the cell called a phagosome.

Once the phagosome is formed, it fuses with lysosomes, which are organelles containing powerful digestive enzymes. This fusion creates a phagolysosome, where the ingested material is broken down and neutralized. The cellular debris or waste products are then expelled from the cell.

Phagocytosis plays a vital role in innate immunity, acting as a first line of defense against pathogens. It is also essential for tissue homeostasis, removing cellular debris and maintaining tissue integrity. Furthermore, phagocytic cells can present fragments of engulfed pathogens to other immune cells, initiating an adaptive immune response. This fundamental cellular process is indispensable for the survival and health of multicellular organisms.
