Melting is the transition from solid to liquid, occurring at the melting point. Freezing is the reverse process, from liquid to solid, happening at the freezing point, which is the same temperature as the melting point. Boiling is the transition from liquid to gas, happening at the boiling point. Condensation is the reverse, from gas to liquid. Sublimation is the direct transition from solid to gas, bypassing the liquid state, as seen with dry ice. Deposition is the reverse of sublimation, from gas to solid.

The temperature at which a phase transition occurs is known as the transition temperature or phase point. These transitions are reversible and depend on pressure as well as temperature. For example, water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure, but at a lower temperature at higher altitudes where the pressure is reduced.
