Faasimuutoslämmönsäilytys refers to a thermal energy storage system that utilizes the latent heat of a phase change material. This technology stores and releases thermal energy when the material transitions between its solid, liquid, or gaseous states. Unlike sensible heat storage, which relies on temperature changes, phase change material (PCM) storage stores a significant amount of energy at a near-constant temperature during the phase transition.

The core principle involves selecting a PCM with a melting or solidification point that matches the desired operating temperature range for heating or cooling applications. During charging, heat is supplied to the PCM, causing it to melt and absorb latent heat. During discharging, the PCM solidifies, releasing the stored latent heat. Common PCMs include paraffin waxes, salt hydrates, and fatty acids, chosen based on their melting point, energy density, thermal conductivity, and cost.

Faasimuutoslämmönsäilytys systems are employed in various applications, such as building climate control for passive heating and cooling, solar thermal energy storage, and industrial waste heat recovery. Their advantages include high energy storage density, isothermal operation during phase change, and the potential for compact system design.
