Extrusomal refers to genetic material, typically DNA, that is located outside of the nucleus of a cell. In eukaryotic cells, the vast majority of an organism's genetic material is housed within the nucleus in the form of chromosomes. However, certain organelles, most notably mitochondria and chloroplasts (in plant cells and algae), contain their own circular DNA molecules. This extrachromosomal DNA replicates independently of nuclear DNA and carries genes essential for the function of these organelles.
