Etäanalyysi, known in English as remote sensing, is the process of detecting and measuring information about an object or phenomenon from a distance, without direct physical contact. This is typically achieved through the use of sensors that are mounted on platforms such as satellites, aircraft, or drones. These sensors record energy that is reflected or emitted by the Earth's surface, or by objects within the atmosphere.

The types of energy that remote sensing systems detect include visible light, infrared radiation, and microwave energy. Different materials reflect and emit these energies differently, allowing for the identification and characterization of various features on the Earth's surface. For instance, vegetation appears green in visible light because it reflects green wavelengths more than other colors. In infrared, healthy vegetation reflects strongly, while stressed or dead vegetation reflects less.

The data collected through remote sensing can be used for a wide range of applications. These include environmental monitoring, such as tracking deforestation, monitoring climate change, assessing natural disasters like floods and wildfires, and mapping land cover.
