Origin and scope: The term aesthetic derives from Greek aisthēsis, perception, and the modern discipline emerged in early modern philosophy, notably through Baumgarten, who introduced aesthetics as a distinct field. Classic questions include what makes something beautiful, how aesthetic judgments are formed, and whether beauty is universal or culturally relative.
