Erosão is a natural process of wearing away and removal of soil, rock, or other surface material by the action of natural agents like wind, water, ice, and gravity. It is a fundamental geological process that shapes the Earth's surface. While erosion is a natural phenomenon, human activities can significantly accelerate its rate.

Water erosion is one of the most common forms, occurring when rainfall or surface runoff detaches and transports soil particles. This can manifest as sheet erosion, where a thin layer of soil is removed uniformly; rill erosion, forming small channels; or gully erosion, creating larger, deeper channels. Coastal erosion, caused by wave action and currents, also reshapes coastlines.

Wind erosion is prevalent in arid and semi-arid regions where vegetation cover is sparse. Wind picks up and carries loose soil particles, which can lead to dust storms and land degradation. Glacial erosion occurs as glaciers move, grinding and transporting rock material, carving out valleys and fjords.

Gravitational erosion, or mass wasting, involves the downslope movement of rock and soil due to gravity. This includes landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls.

The impacts of accelerated erosion can be severe, including loss of fertile topsoil, reduced agricultural productivity, sedimentation of rivers and reservoirs, and increased risk of flooding. Sustainable land management practices, such as conservation tillage, cover cropping, and terracing, are employed to mitigate erosion and conserve soil resources. Understanding the processes and drivers of erosion is crucial for effective environmental management and land use planning.
