Epoxysilanes are a class of organosilane compounds that contain both an epoxide (epoxy) functional group and hydrolyzable silicon alkoxy groups. They are typically designed with a glycidyl or similar epoxy-bearing moiety attached to a silicon atom bearing alkoxy substituents, such as methoxy or ethoxy groups. This combination allows them to act as reactive coupling agents that can bond organic polymers to inorganic surfaces and also participate in network formation during curing.

Chemically, epoxysilanes are usually prepared by introducing an epoxy-containing chain to a silicon-centered silane with leaving groups that can be replaced by alkoxy groups. Upon exposure to moisture, the alkoxy groups hydrolyze to silanols and subsequently condense to form siloxane networks. The epoxy group can remain reactive and open under curing conditions, enabling crosslinking with amines, acids, or other nucleophiles present in the formulation.

Common uses include adhesion promotion in coatings, sealants, and composites; as coupling agents for glass, silica, and mineral fillers; and as surface modifiers for polymers and textiles. They are frequently employed in epoxy resins, vinyl esters, and polyurethane systems to improve wetting, adhesion, and chemical resistance. Notable examples are glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane and glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane, which are widely used as silane coupling agents and crosslinking intermediates.

Safety and handling require attention to the epoxy functionality and hydrolyzable silane groups, which can be irritants and react with moisture. They are typically stored in dry, tightly sealed containers to minimize premature hydrolysis.
