Entitate is the Romanian term for “entity.” In general usage, it denotes something that exists independently or has a distinct identity. The word is used across disciplines to refer to real objects, persons, or abstract concepts that can be identified and discussed as a unit.

In philosophy and ontology, an entity is any item with being. The concept helps distinguish what exists from what does not, and from properties or relations that objects bear. Debates cover issues of persistence, identity over time, universals versus particulars, and the criteria by which entities are said to exist.

In information systems and data modeling, an entity represents a real-world object about which data is stored. An entity type defines a class of objects (for example, Customer), while attributes describe properties (name, email). Keys identify individual instances, and relationships link entities (such as a customer placing orders).

In law and business, a legal entity is an organization or person recognized by law as having rights and duties, able to own property and enter contracts. Corporations, partnerships, and government agencies are common examples; the concept is central to liability, taxation, and governance.

Other areas use the term to denote referents in linguistics and knowledge representations, including entities in ontologies and knowledge graphs. Across contexts, entitate emphasizes recognizability and distinct existence within a system of analysis.
