Energyweighted is an adjective used in scientific contexts to describe a quantity, method, or statistic that incorporates energy as a weighting factor. In such cases, each contribution is weighted in proportion to its energy, so higher-energy components have more influence on the result.

A common instance is the energy-weighted average, where the average value is obtained by weighting each measurement by its energy and dividing by the sum of energies. This contrasts with a simple arithmetic mean that treats all measurements equally. Energy-weighted sums are also used to produce energy-weighted histograms, where counts are multiplied by the energy of each event or by an energy-dependent weight before binning.

Applications appear in several fields. In spectroscopy and detector physics, energy weighting can improve estimates of true energy distributions when detectors respond nonlinearly or when background noise scales with energy. In high-energy and gamma-ray astronomy, energy-weighted flux calculations emphasize higher-energy photons that carry more energy. In particle and nuclear physics, energy weighting is used in the calculation of response functions, moments, or cross sections where energy dependence matters.

Cautions: energy weighting can bias results toward higher-energy contributions and may not be appropriate when energy is not a meaningful weighting factor or when detector efficiency varies with energy. Careful choice of weighting function and error propagation is required.
