endasse

Endasse is a fictional language developed for worldbuilding and linguistic illustration. It is not a real-world language, but is presented here as part of a hypothetical language family within an imagined continent. In its setting, Endasse is spoken along a coastal belt of the continent of Nyrath and functions as a lingua franca among trading communities and smaller polities.

Classification and history: Endasse is described as belonging to the Endasian branch of the broader Endarea macro-family in the fiction. The earliest attested forms appear in archival texts from the city of Aeltara around 1200 years before the present chronology; contact with neighboring languages led to regional dialects and sociolects.

Phonology and grammar: Endasse features a consonant system including p, t, k, b, d, g, f, s, ʃ, h, m, n, r, l, w, j and a five-vowel set a, e, i, o, u with a limited form of vowel harmony. The language is largely agglutinative, with suffixes marking tense, case, number and agreement. Basic word order is subject–object–verb, and nouns inflect for number and case; adjectives agree with the nouns they modify.

Writing system: Endasse uses an alphabet of about 24 letters written left to right, with diacritics to indicate vowel quality and tone. Most texts in the fictional world are preserved in ritual inscriptions or court records, while modern learners study a compact reference grammar and dictionary.
