Embryoutviklingen, or embryonic development, is the process by which a multicellular organism develops from a fertilized egg to a fetus. This period begins with fertilization, where a sperm cell fuses with an egg cell, forming a zygote. The zygote undergoes rapid cell division, known as cleavage, which increases the number of cells while maintaining the overall size of the embryo.

During the early stages of development, the embryo is called a blastocyst. It consists of an outer layer of cells called the trophoblast and an inner cell mass, which will eventually develop into the embryo proper. The trophoblast will later form the placenta, while the inner cell mass differentiates into the three germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.

The ectoderm gives rise to the nervous system, skin, and sensory organs. The mesoderm forms the muscles, bones, circulatory system, and reproductive organs. The endoderm develops into the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems, as well as the liver and pancreas.

As development progresses, the embryo undergoes a process called gastrulation, where the three germ layers are formed. This is followed by neurulation, in which the neural tube develops into the brain and spinal cord. The embryo then enters the organogenesis stage, where major organs begin to form and function.
