Elzivattyúzás is a traditional Hungarian folk practice historically performed in the spring. It involves the ritualistic beating of bundles of switches or branches, often made from willow or birch, against household objects and even people. The primary purpose of elzivattyúzás was believed to be the expulsion of winter spirits, illness, and bad luck, inviting in health, fertility, and the abundance of the coming spring.

The practice varied regionally, but common elements included adults and children gathering for the beating. The sounds produced by the switches hitting surfaces were thought to be particularly effective in warding off negativity. In some areas, the beating was accompanied by specific songs or incantations. The custom also sometimes involved symbolically "waking up" dormant nature and the inhabitants of the house.

While the exact origins are debated, it is likely connected to ancient pre-Christian spring rituals focused on purification and renewal. Elzivattyúzás has largely faded from modern practice, becoming more of a cultural memory than a widespread custom. However, it remains a fascinating example of how rural communities historically used symbolic actions to navigate the transitions of the seasons and ensure well-being. The term itself is derived from "el" (away) and "zivattyú" (a whip or switch).
