Elektroninsiirtoreitteinä, often translated as electron transport chains, are fundamental to cellular respiration and photosynthesis. They are a series of protein complexes embedded within a membrane, typically the inner mitochondrial membrane in eukaryotes or the plasma membrane in prokaryotes for respiration, and the thylakoid membrane in chloroplasts for photosynthesis.

The primary function of an electron transport chain is to facilitate the controlled release of energy from redox reactions. High-energy electrons, usually originating from electron carriers like NADH and FADH2 (produced during earlier stages of metabolism), are passed sequentially from one complex to the next. Each transfer involves a slight decrease in energy level, and this energy is harnessed to pump protons (H+) across the membrane, creating an electrochemical gradient.

This proton gradient represents stored potential energy, analogous to water behind a dam. The flow of protons back across the membrane through a specialized enzyme called ATP synthase drives the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's main energy currency. Oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor in aerobic respiration, combining with electrons and protons to form water. In photosynthesis, the electron transport chain regenerates ATP and NADPH, which are used to convert carbon dioxide into sugars. The efficiency of electron transport chains is crucial for sustaining life.
