Elektólýtar are substances that produce an electrically conductive solution when dissolved in a polar solvent such as water. This conductivity arises from the presence of mobile ions, which are charged atoms or molecules.

There are two main types of elektólýtar: strong and weak. Strong elektólýtar, such as sodium chloride (NaCl) or sulfuric acid (H2SO4), dissociate almost completely into their constituent ions when dissolved. This results in a highly conductive solution. Weak elektólýtar, like acetic acid (CH3COOH) or ammonia (NH3), only partially dissociate, meaning a significant portion remains in molecular form. Consequently, solutions of weak elektólýtar are less conductive than those of strong elektólýtar.

The process by which elektólýtar form ions is called dissociation or ionization. In dissociation, an ionic compound breaks apart into its constituent cations and anions. In ionization, a covalent compound reacts with the solvent (typically water) to form ions.

Elektólýtar play crucial roles in many natural and industrial processes. In biological systems, they are essential for nerve signal transmission, muscle contraction, and maintaining fluid balance. Common examples include sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride ions. Industrially, elektólýtar are used in electroplating, batteries, and electrolysis, a process used to decompose chemical compounds. The concentration and type of elektólýtar in a solution can be measured using conductivity meters or by analyzing the electrical potential between electrodes.
