An exoplanet, also known as an extrasolar planet, is a planet that orbits a star outside of our solar system. The first exoplanet was discovered in 1992, orbiting a pulsar. Since then, thousands of exoplanets have been confirmed, with many more candidates awaiting confirmation.

The radial velocity method, which measures the wobble of a star caused by the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet, is another important technique. Direct imaging, though challenging, can also be used to capture light from exoplanets themselves.

The study of exoplanets is a rapidly advancing field, with ongoing research focused on characterizing their atmospheres, searching for biosignatures, and understanding the diversity of planetary formation and evolution across the galaxy. The ultimate goal for many is to find an exoplanet that could support life.
