Durchkontakt, also known as a plated-through hole (PTH), is a critical component in the manufacturing of printed circuit boards (PCBs). It is essentially a conductive pathway that connects different layers of a multilayer PCB or provides an electrical connection between the top and bottom surfaces of a single-layer board. The process involves drilling a hole through the PCB substrate and then metallizing the inner surface of that hole. This metallization creates a conductive cylinder, effectively forming an electrical connection. Copper is the most common material used for this plating process due to its excellent conductivity. Durchkontakt technology allows for complex circuitry to be routed in three dimensions, significantly increasing the density and functionality of electronic devices. Without durchkontakt, the miniaturization and sophistication of modern electronics would be impossible. The reliability of a PCB is heavily dependent on the quality of its durchkontakt formation.
