Drivmedel is the term used for substances that are burned or otherwise used to generate propulsion energy in engines or turbines. In Swedish usage it mainly refers to fuels for motor vehicles and other forms of propulsion, including road transport, aviation and some maritime applications. Drivmedel can be liquids or gases and may be fossil or renewable, or produced synthetically.

Common drivmedel include fossil fuels such as bensin (petrol) and diesel. Renewable and low‑carbon options include etanol (ethyl alcohol), biogas, biodiesel (for example FAME or HVO blends), and hydrogen used in either combustion engines or fuel cells. Electricity is not typically classified as a drivmedel, though electrified propulsion systems increasingly replace conventional fuels. In addition, synthetic fuels or “e-fuels” produced from captured carbon and hydrogen are being developed to provide low‑emission options.

Production and supply vary by fuel type. Fossil drivmedel are extracted from crude oil and refined. Biofuels are manufactured from biomass or waste. Hydrogen can be produced from natural gas or via electrolysis using renewable electricity. Synthetic fuels are produced from captured carbon and hydrogen through chemical processes.

Regulation and taxation play a significant role in drivmedel markets. Many countries apply energy taxes and, in some cases, carbon taxes to fuels. Standards cover fuel quality, octane rating for bensin, cetane rating for diesel, and sustainability criteria for biofuels, along with labeling and other consumer protections.

Environmental and safety considerations are central to drivmedel policy. Emissions vary by fuel type and production method, influencing lifecycle greenhouse gas assessments. Fuels are flammable and require appropriate storage, handling, and compliance with safety regulations. The market structure for drivmedel is evolving with the transition toward decarbonization and alternative propulsion options.
