Dramaturges are theatre professionals who contribute to the development and interpretation of performances through research, analysis, and collaboration. Working as part of a production team, they help shape how a play or performance is understood and staged, serving as a link among playwrights, directors, actors, and designers. Their responsibilities can span script analysis, historical and cultural research, adaptation or translation, and the development of a production concept, pacing, and structure. They also prepare audience-facing materials such as program notes, prefaces, and educational resources.

The term dramaturge (or dramaturgist) originates from the German Dramaturg, a role that emerged in German-speaking theatres in the 18th and 19th centuries and spread widely in the 20th century. Today dramaturges work in theatre, opera, and increasingly in film and television, though the function varies by company. In development contexts, dramaturges may workshop new plays, assist in script development, and coordinate notes from readings and rehearsals. In established productions, they may conduct ongoing research into period detail, themes, and subtexts, and help designers, actors and directors ensure coherence across elements of the production.

Work settings and paths: many theatres maintain resident dramaturges or literary managers; others hire dramaturges for specific projects. Training often includes theatre studies, literature, history, or film, and many practitioners hold advanced degrees and strong research and communication skills. The dramaturge’s aim is to deepen the audience's understanding while supporting the creative team’s artistic aims.
