In simpler terms, multiplying a number by a sum is the same as multiplying that number by each term in the sum and then adding the results.

The distributive property is essential for simplifying algebraic expressions, solving equations, and performing various mathematical manipulations. For instance, when expanding expressions like 3(x + 2), we apply the distributive property to get (3 * x) + (3 * 2), which simplifies to 3x + 6.
