Diketones are organic compounds characterized by the presence of two ketone functional groups. These groups are defined by a carbonyl (C=O) moiety attached to two carbon atoms. The arrangement and spacing of these two carbonyl groups within the molecule determine the specific class of diketone.

A common type of diketone is a 1,2-diketone, also known as an alpha-diketone. In these compounds, the two carbonyl groups are adjacent to each other, sharing a single carbon-carbon bond. Examples include biacetyl (2,3-butanedione), which is responsible for the buttery flavor in some foods, and benzil. 1,2-diketones exhibit unique reactivity due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the adjacent carbonyls.

Another important class is the 1,3-diketone, or beta-diketone, where the carbonyl groups are separated by one carbon atom. Acetylacetone (2,4-pentanedione) is a well-known example. 1,3-diketones are known for their ability to undergo keto-enol tautomerism, where a proton can shift between the central carbon atom and an oxygen atom of a carbonyl group, forming an enol. This tautomerism contributes to their stability and acidity.

1,4-diketones and other diketones with carbonyl groups separated by more than two carbon atoms also exist. Diketones find various applications in organic synthesis, as building blocks for heterocycles, and in the food and fragrance industries. Their specific properties and uses are dependent on the position and overall structure of the diketone molecule.
