Industrially, dicarboxylic acids are important intermediates in the synthesis of polymers like polyesters and polyamides. Adipic acid, for instance, is a key component in the production of nylon. They also find applications as chelating agents, food additives, and in the pharmaceutical industry. Their chemical reactivity allows them to undergo various reactions, including esterification, amidation, and decarboxylation.
