Diazotizationazo is not a standard term in mainstream chemical literature, but it is sometimes used informally to describe the two-step sequence of diazotization followed by azo coupling that is central to the synthesis of azo compounds. In this sense, the word combines diazotization (diazotización) with the azo linkage (azo), highlighting the transformation from an amine to a diazonium intermediate and finally to an azo dye or pigment.

In practice, the process begins with diazotization. An aromatic primary amine is treated with nitrous acid generated in situ from sodium nitrite in a strongly acidic medium, typically hydrochloric acid, at low temperature (around 0–5 °C). The amine is converted to the corresponding aryl diazonium salt, which is usually soluble in water but can be unstable and must be used promptly.

The second step is azo coupling, where the diazonium salt acts as an electrophile and couples with an activated arene, such as a phenol, naphthol, or another amine, under mildly basic conditions. This electrophilic aromatic substitution forms the azo linkage (N=N) and yields an azo compound, commonly an azo dye or pigment. The exact coupling partner and conditions influence color and solubility.

Applications of this sequence are widespread in the textile and dye industries, where azo dyes constitute a large class of colorants. Safety and environmental considerations are important, as diazonium salts can be unstable and some azo dyes or their reduction products can release aromatic amines of concern. Proper handling, storage, and waste treatment are essential.
