diatomeeëne

Diatomeeëne is an adjective found in some French-language scientific texts to indicate a relation to diatoms, a group of mostly unicellular algae characterized by their silica-based cell walls, called frustules. In English, the corresponding term is diatomaceous; the exact French spelling varies, with common forms including diatoméene or diatoméenne. The term diatomeeëne is rarely used outside French literature, and English sources usually employ diatomaceous or diatomaceous earth when referring to diatom-derived silica materials.

Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are highly diverse and ecologically important in marine and freshwater ecosystems. Their frustules, composed mainly of hydrated silica (opal), exhibit species-specific shapes and perforations. Diatomaceous materials accumulate as deposits over geological timescales and form diatomaceous earth (diatomite), which has a porous, abrasive, and filtration-friendly character. In industry, diatomaceous earth is used for filtration, polishing, and as an inert carrier for pesticides; paleontologists and sedimentologists study diatom-dominated deposits as records of past climates and water conditions.
