A derivatsioonisüsteem, or derivation system in English, is a fundamental concept in formal language theory and computer science. It refers to a set of rules and a starting symbol from which a language can be generated. Essentially, it's a mechanism for constructing strings that belong to a specific language.

The core components of a derivatsioonisüsteem typically include a set of terminal symbols, which are the basic building blocks of the language's strings, and a set of non-terminal symbols, which are intermediate symbols used in the derivation process. Additionally, there is a start symbol, a special non-terminal from which all derivations begin. The rules, often called production rules, define how non-terminal symbols can be replaced by sequences of terminal and/or non-terminal symbols.

A derivation is a sequence of applications of these production rules, starting from the start symbol and progressively replacing non-terminal symbols until only terminal symbols remain. The resulting string of terminal symbols is then considered to be a member of the language defined by the derivatsioonisüsteem. This process is crucial for understanding the structure and properties of formal languages, and it underpins many areas of computer science, including compiler design and natural language processing.
