Denervációhoz refers to the loss of nerve supply to a body part, organ, or tissue. This disconnection can occur for various reasons, including injury to the nerve itself, damage to the nerve pathway in the brain or spinal cord, or disease affecting the nerves. When denervation happens, the signals that the nerve normally transmits to control function, sensation, or muscle activity are interrupted.

Consequences of denervation vary depending on the type of nerve affected. Motor nerves control muscle movement, so their denervation can lead to muscle weakness, atrophy (wasting), and paralysis. Sensory nerves transmit sensations like touch, pain, and temperature. Their loss results in numbness or altered sensation in the affected area. Autonomic nerves regulate involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure. Denervation of these nerves can disrupt these essential processes.

Common causes of denervation include trauma, such as physical injury to nerves, and surgical procedures that may inadvertently damage nerves. Neurological disorders like stroke, spinal cord injury, and peripheral neuropathies (e.g., diabetic neuropathy, Guillain-Barré syndrome) are also significant contributors. Inflammatory conditions and certain infections can also lead to nerve damage and subsequent denervation. Diagnosis often involves clinical examination, nerve conduction studies, and electromyography (EMG) to assess nerve and muscle function. Treatment strategies aim to address the underlying cause and may include physical therapy to prevent muscle atrophy, medications, or surgical interventions if appropriate.
