Demagnetoi is a term that refers to the process of removing or significantly reducing the magnetic properties of a material. This is typically achieved by exposing the magnetized object to a strong alternating magnetic field that gradually decreases in strength. The alternating field effectively randomizes the magnetic domains within the material. As the field weakens, these domains remain in a more random orientation, resulting in a net magnetic moment that is close to zero.

Various methods can be used for demagnetization. One common technique involves using a demagnetizing coil, which is a solenoid through which an alternating current is passed. The object to be demagnetized is passed through or placed within this coil, and then slowly withdrawn while the alternating current is still active. The current is then gradually reduced to zero or the object is removed from the field before the current is switched off. Another method involves heating the material above its Curie temperature, the point at which it loses its ferromagnetic properties. Upon cooling in the absence of an external magnetic field, the material will not retain significant magnetism.
