Dekanos is the Greek term for a deacon, an ordained minister in the Christian church who serves under a bishop and assists in liturgical and administrative functions. The word derives from the Greek “δεκανός,” which historically meant “one who commands a district,” reflecting an early administrative role that later merged with clerical office. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the deacon is the first of the orders in the clerical hierarchy, following the hierarchy of hierodeacons and bishops. Their responsibilities include proclaiming the Gospel during services, serving the clergy, assisting with the distribution of communion, and performing pastoral and charitable duties. Unordained deacons, known as “parakoimomenoi,” are laypersons who fulfill some of these functions but are not ordained.
