They are analogous to Heating Degree Days (HDD) but are focused on above-threshold temperatures.

The calculation of degree Celsius days involves selecting a base temperature, typically representing a threshold below which a particular process is considered inactive or insignificant. For each day in the period of interest, the daily mean temperature is compared to this base temperature. If the daily mean temperature is above the base temperature, the difference is calculated. This difference, representing the accumulated heat for that day, is then summed over the entire period. For example, if the base temperature is 15°C and the daily mean temperature is 20°C, then 5 CDD are accumulated for that day.

Degree Celsius days are widely used to estimate crop development and predict harvest times, as many plant growth processes are influenced by accumulated heat. In the energy sector, CDD can be used to estimate cooling energy requirements, similar to how HDD estimates heating needs. A higher CDD value generally indicates a greater need for cooling. The specific base temperature used in the calculation can vary depending on the application and the specific crop or process being studied.
