Cribbage is a card game for two to four players, typically played with a standard 52-card deck. The objective is to score points by forming combinations of cards that add up to 15, or that form runs or pairs, in a hand and during play. Players score points by laying down cards during a phase called "the play" and by showing combinations of cards in their hand at the end of each round.

The game is played over a series of rounds. At the start of each round, each player is dealt six cards. They then choose two cards to discard face down into a separate pile called "the crib," which belongs to the dealer. The non-dealer then cuts the deck, and the dealer reveals the top card of the lower portion of the deck. This card is called "the starter card" and is used by all players to help form scoring combinations with their hands and with the crib.

During "the play," players take turns playing one card at a time from their hand, announcing the running total of the cards played so far. Points are scored immediately for combinations that add up to 15, for sequences (runs), and for pairs, three of a kind, and four of a kind. After all cards have been played, players score points for combinations within their own hands, including the starter card. Finally, the dealer scores points for the crib, again using the starter card. The first player to reach a predetermined score, usually 121 points, wins the game.
