Convección is a mode of heat transfer that occurs in fluids, both liquids and gases. It involves the movement of the fluid itself, carrying thermal energy with it. Unlike conduction, where heat is transferred through direct molecular collisions, convection relies on bulk motion of the fluid. This motion can be either natural or forced.

Natural convection, also known as free convection, is driven by density differences that arise from temperature variations within the fluid. When a portion of a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place. This creates a continuous circulation pattern that transfers heat. A common example is the heating of water in a pot on a stove; the water at the bottom heats up, becomes less dense, and rises, while cooler water from the top descends.

Forced convection occurs when an external force, such as a fan or a pump, is used to move the fluid. This external force enhances the rate of heat transfer compared to natural convection. Examples include using a fan to circulate air in a room or the operation of a car's cooling system, where a pump circulates coolant.

Convection plays a crucial role in many natural phenomena and technological applications. It is responsible for weather patterns, ocean currents, and the internal heat transfer within stars. In engineering, it is utilized in heating and cooling systems, heat exchangers, and many industrial processes where efficient heat transfer is required. The efficiency of convective heat transfer depends on factors like the fluid's properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity), the flow velocity, and the geometry of the system.
