Compattezza is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in analysis and topology. It is a property of certain sets within a metric space or a topological space that combines the ideas of being closed and bounded.

In a metric space, a set is considered compattezza if it is both closed and bounded. A set is closed if it contains all of its limit points. A set is bounded if it is contained within some ball of finite radius. This definition is particularly useful in the context of the Heine-Borel theorem, which states that in Euclidean space (R^n), a set is compact if and only if it is closed and bounded.

In a general topological space, the definition of compattezza is more abstract. A set is compact if every open cover of the set has a finite subcover. An open cover is a collection of open sets whose union contains the set. A finite subcover is a finite subset of that collection whose union also contains the set. This definition is more general and applies to spaces that are not necessarily metric spaces.

Compact sets have several important properties. For instance, continuous real-valued functions defined on a compact set always attain their maximum and minimum values on that set.
