Colostrogenesis refers to the process of colostrum production in mammals. Colostrum is the initial mammary gland secretion produced immediately after parturition, before the onset of true lactation. It is a nutrient-rich fluid that plays a critical role in the health and survival of newborn offspring.

The composition of colostrum differs significantly from mature milk. It is characterized by higher concentrations of proteins, particularly immunoglobulins (antibodies), which provide passive immunity to the newborn. These antibodies are crucial for protecting the vulnerable infant from infections in its early life, as its own immune system is not yet fully developed. Colostrum also contains a greater abundance of growth factors, enzymes, and certain vitamins and minerals compared to later milk.

The synthesis and secretion of colostrum are hormonally regulated, influenced by changes in reproductive hormones around the time of birth. The mammary glands undergo significant physiological changes during late pregnancy in preparation for colostrum production. Following birth, the continued suckling or milk removal by the offspring stimulates the transition from colostrum production to mature milk synthesis. This transition typically occurs over a period of several days. The importance of colostrum for neonatal health is widely recognized across many mammalian species.
