Chrupavku is a Czech word that translates to cartilage in English. Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue found in many areas of the body, including the joints between bones, the ear, the nose, and the rib cage. It is composed of specialized cells called chondrocytes, which produce a matrix of collagen and elastic fibers.

There are three main types of cartilage: hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, and fibrocartilage. Hyaline cartilage is the most common type, found in the articular surfaces of bones, the rib cage, and the nose. It provides smooth surfaces for joint movement and structural support. Elastic cartilage, found in the ear and epiglottis, is more flexible due to the presence of elastic fibers, allowing for repeated bending. Fibrocartilage, present in structures like intervertebral discs and the menisci of the knee, is the strongest type, offering shock absorption and resistance to compression.

Cartilage plays crucial roles in the body. In joints, it reduces friction and absorbs shock, protecting bones from damage. In the respiratory system, cartilage supports the trachea and bronchi, keeping them open for airflow. It also contributes to the shape and flexibility of the ears and nose. Unlike bone, cartilage does not have a blood supply, which means it heals very slowly if injured. Damage to cartilage can lead to conditions like osteoarthritis, characterized by pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in affected joints.
