Chittagong, officially Chattogram, is a major coastal city in southeastern Bangladesh. It serves as the capital of Chattogram Division and the country’s principal seaport city. Located on the banks of the Karnaphuli River near the Bay of Bengal, it is the second-largest city in the country by population and a major commercial hub. The Port of Chittagong, the largest seaport in Bangladesh, handles a substantial share of the country’s trade.

The city is connected by Shah Amanat International Airport and an extensive rail and road network. The Karnaphuli River provides a natural harbor that supports both freight and fishing activity. The area includes the Chittagong Export Processing Zone and various industrial clusters.

Chittagong has a long commercial history, dating to ancient and medieval times as a trading center. Later under Mughal and British influence, it remained an important port. Today the city hosts several higher education institutions, notably the University of Chittagong.

Demographically, Chittagong is diverse, with a Bengali majority and minority communities; it is a cultural and economic gateway for southeastern Bangladesh, and a key node in regional commerce and maritime transport.
