Chiaungs are a traditional form of Chinese shadow puppetry, originating from the southern regions of China, particularly Guangdong and Guangxi. The art form dates back over a thousand years and is deeply rooted in local folklore, religious rituals, and cultural storytelling. The word "chiaung" (also spelled *xiang* or *xiangsheng*) translates to "shadow" or "figure," reflecting the core technique of projecting silhouettes onto a screen using light and puppets.

The puppets themselves are crafted from leather or paper, often intricately designed to represent mythological figures, historical characters, or animals. Performances typically involve a single puppeteer manipulating the figures with long rods while accompanying themselves with a unique musical style known as *xiaosheng* (小生), a blend of singing, storytelling, and percussion. The narratives often draw from classical Chinese literature, local legends, or moral tales, blending humor, drama, and social commentary.

Chiaung performances were historically tied to festivals, temple ceremonies, and rural gatherings, serving as both entertainment and a means of preserving cultural heritage. Over time, the art form declined due to urbanization and changing cultural priorities, though efforts have been made in recent decades to revive and document it. Today, chiaung is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by Chinese authorities, with some regions actively promoting its preservation through workshops, performances, and educational initiatives.

The technique of chiaung shares similarities with other shadow puppet traditions worldwide, such as Wayang Kulit in Indonesia or Karagöz in Turkey, but its distinct musical style and narrative structure set it apart. While less widely known internationally, chiaung remains a significant cultural artifact, offering insights into China’s historical entertainment practices and artistic expression.
