Chemoautotrophy is a metabolic process by which organisms obtain energy from the oxidation of inorganic chemical compounds. Unlike photosynthesis, which utilizes light energy, chemoautotrophs derive their energy from chemical reactions. These organisms are autotrophs, meaning they can produce their own food, typically in the form of organic carbon compounds, from inorganic sources. They achieve this by using the energy released from the oxidation of inorganic molecules to fix carbon dioxide or other inorganic carbon sources into organic matter.

The specific inorganic compounds oxidized by chemoautotrophs vary widely. Common examples include hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), ferrous iron (Fe2+), and molecular hydrogen (H2). Different groups of chemoautotrophs specialize in oxidizing different substrates. For instance, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria use hydrogen sulfide or elemental sulfur, nitrifying bacteria oxidize ammonia and nitrite, and iron-oxidizing bacteria utilize ferrous iron.

Chemoautotrophy is crucial in many ecosystems, particularly in environments where light is scarce or absent, such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents, subterranean caves, and within the soil. These organisms often form the base of food webs in such extreme habitats, supporting diverse communities of other life forms. Their metabolic activities can also play significant roles in global biogeochemical cycles, influencing the distribution and availability of essential elements like nitrogen and sulfur.
