Cercar is a verb found in both Spanish and Portuguese with similar core meanings: to surround, enclose, or fence in a space. It can describe erecting a physical boundary around a plot or area, as well as surrounding something or someone in a broader sense. In addition to its literal use, cercar can be employed in figurative contexts to denote encircling or besetting, though in everyday speech the literal sense is more common.

Etymology and related forms vary slightly between the languages but share the same Latin-inspired idea of going around or enclosing. In both languages, cercar gives rise to nouns such as cerca or cerco (the fence or boundary) and cercado (an enclosed space or fenced area). These nouns are used to describe fences, enclosures, or fenced properties, for example a wooden fence or a cattle enclosure.

Usage in Spanish and Portuguese is largely parallel. In Spanish, cercar is a regular -ar verb and can be used with a direct object: “El agricultor cercó el terreno” (the farmer fenced the land). In a military or historical sense, one might say “cercar la ciudad” (to besiege or surround the city). In Portuguese, cercar follows regular -ar conjugation: “eu cerco, tu cercas, ele cerca, nós cercamos, eles cercam,” with similar meanings for physical and figurative enclosure. The noun forms also appear in both languages: “cerca” or “cerco” for the fence, and “cercado” as an enclosing space or adjective meaning enclosed.
