Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection that affects the deeper layers of the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. It is characterized by redness, swelling, warmth, and pain in the affected area. The infection typically occurs when bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, enter the skin through a break or cut, such as a minor wound, insect bite, or surgical incision. While cellulitis can appear anywhere on the body, it most frequently affects the legs and arms.

Symptoms of cellulitis can develop rapidly and may include a spreading red rash, a feeling of warmth over the affected skin, tenderness or pain, and swelling. Fever and chills can also occur, indicating a more systemic infection. In some cases, blisters may form, and the skin might appear shiny and stretched.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the appearance of the affected skin and the patient's symptoms. In some instances, a doctor may take a sample of fluid from a blister or a blood test to identify the specific bacteria causing the infection and determine the most effective antibiotic treatment.

Treatment for cellulitis involves a course of antibiotics, typically taken orally for 7 to 10 days. For more severe infections, hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics may be necessary. It is crucial to complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed to ensure the infection is fully cleared. Prompt medical attention is recommended for suspected cellulitis to prevent complications, which can include the infection spreading to the bloodstream or lymph system.
