Celleånding is the biochemical process by which cells break down glucose and other fuel molecules to release energy in the form of ATP. This energy is then used to power various cellular functions. The overall process can be summarized by the equation: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP). This reaction occurs in several stages.

The first stage, glycolysis, takes place in the cytoplasm and involves the breakdown of glucose into pyruvate. This process yields a small amount of ATP and NADH. If oxygen is present, pyruvate then enters the mitochondria for further breakdown through the Krebs cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle). The Krebs cycle further oxidizes the products of glycolysis, generating more ATP, NADH, and FADH2.

The final and most productive stage is oxidative phosphorylation, which also occurs in the mitochondria. Here, the electrons carried by NADH and FADH2 are passed along an electron transport chain, releasing energy that is used to pump protons across a membrane. This creates a proton gradient, which drives the synthesis of a large amount of ATP through a process called chemiosmosis. In the absence of oxygen, cells can undergo anaerobic respiration or fermentation, which produces significantly less ATP.
