Catalystfacilitating is a term used to describe deliberate actions and design strategies intended to enhance the performance of a catalyst without itself undergoing permanent chemical change. It encompasses interventions that accelerate catalytic processes, improve selectivity, or extend catalyst lifetime by altering the reaction environment, the catalyst's active sites, or mass and heat transfer around the catalyst.

Mechanisms include modifying solvent or electrolyte properties, adding promoters or cocatalysts that modify active-site chemistry, engineering catalyst supports, controlling particle size, preventing fouling, and improving mass transfer or heat management. In heterogeneous catalysis, surface pretreatment, dopants, and facet control can facilitate activity. In homogeneous catalysis, ligand design, cocatalysts, and in-situ activation are common approaches.

Applications span chemical synthesis, energy conversion, environmental remediation, and electro- or photo-catalysis. Performance is evaluated by turnover frequency, turnover number, yield and selectivity, catalyst stability and resistance to poisoning or leaching.

Limitations include added cost and complexity, potential side reactions, and safety considerations. Proper assessment requires controlled experiments to distinguish facilitating effects from changes to the catalyst itself. The term is not widely used in formal literature, and researchers may describe these efforts as catalyst optimization, process intensification, or system-level design to achieve similar outcomes.
