A capital ship is a large naval or military vessel that serves as a command and control center for a fleet. Historically, these ships were the most powerful and heavily armed vessels in a navy, intended to engage and destroy enemy capital ships. They often carried the most advanced weaponry and armor available, and were manned by the largest crews. The concept of a capital ship has evolved over time with changes in naval technology.

In the age of sail, ships of the line were considered capital ships. These were large, multi-decked warships armed with numerous cannons. Their primary role was to form a battle line and engage the enemy's ships of the line in direct combat. The flagship of a fleet, carrying the admiral, was always a capital ship.

With the advent of steam power and ironclad warships, the definition of a capital ship continued to shift. Battleships and later battlecruisers became the dominant capital ships. These vessels were characterized by their heavy main armament, robust armor plating, and significant displacement. They were designed to project power and control sea lanes.

In modern naval warfare, the role of the traditional capital ship has been largely superseded by aircraft carriers and submarines. Aircraft carriers, with their ability to launch and recover aircraft, have become the central elements of many modern fleets, serving as mobile airbases. Submarines, while often smaller, possess unique stealth capabilities and potent offensive power, playing a crucial strategic role. Nevertheless, the term "capital ship" can still be used colloquially to refer to the largest and most significant warships within a navy.
