The calcaneonavicular ligament is a strong, elastic band of connective tissue located in the foot. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability and structural integrity of the foot, particularly in the hindfoot and midfoot regions. This ligament originates from the anterior and inferior surfaces of the calcaneus, the heel bone, and inserts onto the dorsal and lateral aspects of the navicular bone, a boat-shaped bone located on the medial side of the foot.

Together with the spring ligament (plantar calcaneonavicular ligament), the calcaneonavicular ligament forms a sling-like support for the talar head, the uppermost bone of the ankle joint. This support is vital for maintaining the medial longitudinal arch of the foot, which distributes body weight and absorbs shock during locomotion. The calcaneonavicular ligament contributes to the suspension of the talus, preventing excessive downward displacement. Its elasticity allows for the dynamic adjustments of the foot's arch during walking, running, and standing. Injuries to this ligament, though less common than to other ankle ligaments, can lead to pain, instability, and difficulties with weight-bearing activities.
