CAFVs, or Clean Alternative Fuel Vehicles, are a category of vehicles designed to reduce reliance on conventional gasoline or diesel fuels. They achieve this by utilizing alternative energy sources or technologies that result in lower emissions. This broad classification encompasses a variety of vehicle types and propulsion systems.

One prominent type of CAFv is the electric vehicle (EV), which runs solely on electricity stored in a battery. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also utilize electricity but can switch to a gasoline engine when the battery is depleted. Another significant category includes vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles are also considered CAFVs. These vehicles run on gaseous fuels that are generally cleaner-burning than traditional petroleum products. The primary motivation behind the development and promotion of CAFVs is to mitigate environmental concerns, such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and to enhance energy security by diversifying fuel sources. Governments often offer incentives like tax credits or rebates to encourage the adoption of CAFVs, and their infrastructure, particularly charging stations for EVs, is continuously expanding.
