Bufferiin is a term that refers to a solution designed to resist changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. These solutions are crucial in many scientific and biological applications where maintaining a stable pH is essential for the proper functioning of processes. Bufferin solutions typically consist of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid.

The mechanism by which a buffer works involves the equilibrium between the weak acid (HA) and its conjugate base (A⁻), or the weak base (B) and its conjugate acid (BH⁺). When an acid is added to a buffer solution, the conjugate base component reacts with the added hydrogen ions (H⁺) to form the weak acid, thereby minimizing the increase in overall H⁺ concentration. Conversely, when a base is added, the weak acid component reacts with the added hydroxide ions (OH⁻) to form water and the conjugate base, thus preventing a significant rise in pH.

Bufferin solutions have a specific pH range, known as the buffering capacity, over which they are most effective. This capacity is related to the concentration of the buffer components and their dissociation constants. Common examples of buffer systems include the bicarbonate buffer system in blood, which helps maintain blood pH within a narrow range, and phosphate buffers used in laboratory experiments. The effectiveness of a buffer is greatest when the pH of the solution is close to the pKa of the weak acid (or pKb of the weak base).
