A buck-boost converter is a type of DC-to-DC converter that can produce an output voltage that is either higher or lower than its input voltage. Unlike a buck converter, which can only step down voltage, or a boost converter, which can only step up voltage, the buck-boost converter offers the flexibility of both. This versatility makes it useful in a variety of applications where the input voltage may fluctuate or where a specific, adjustable output voltage is required.

The fundamental principle of operation for a buck-boost converter relies on the switching of an inductor. When the switch is closed, the inductor stores energy from the input source. When the switch is opened, this stored energy is released and, in conjunction with the input voltage, charges the output capacitor. By controlling the duty cycle of the switch – the ratio of the on-time to the total switching period – the output voltage can be regulated to be either positive or negative relative to the input, and its magnitude can be adjusted.

There are several topological variations of the buck-boost converter, including the inverting buck-boost, the non-inverting buck-boost, and the four-switch buck-boost. The inverting topology is the most common, producing a negative output voltage. The non-inverting version requires additional components to achieve a positive output. The four-switch design offers improved efficiency and eliminates the need for a separate input capacitor by using a single-stage power conversion.

Buck-boost converters are employed in applications such as battery chargers, power supplies for portable electronics, and renewable energy systems. Their ability to regulate voltage across a wide range of input conditions is a key advantage. However, they can sometimes exhibit higher switching losses and generate more electromagnetic interference compared to simpler buck or boost converters.
