Brystvorterne, or nipples, are a part of the anatomy found on the chest of both males and females. In females, they are located on the breasts and play a crucial role in breastfeeding. The nipple itself is a small, raised protrusion, typically darker in color than the surrounding skin of the areola. The areola is the pigmented area encircling the nipple.

The primary function of the nipple in lactating individuals is to provide a passage for milk to be expelled from the mammary glands to nourish an infant. Suckling by a baby stimulates nerve endings in the nipple and areola, triggering the release of hormones like prolactin and oxytocin, which are essential for milk production and let-down.

In males, nipples are also present, though they do not have a functional role in reproduction or lactation. Their development is a remnant of embryonic development before sex differentiation. The appearance and size of nipples can vary significantly between individuals, regardless of sex, and this variation is considered normal. Factors such as genetics, hormonal influences, and skin pigmentation can all contribute to these differences.
