Bloedcelletjes, also known as blood cells, are the fundamental cellular components of blood. They are produced in the bone marrow through a process called hematopoiesis. There are three main types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are the most abundant type. Their primary function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and to carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs for exhalation. This is facilitated by hemoglobin, a protein that contains iron and binds to oxygen. Red blood cells lack a nucleus and most organelles, which maximizes the space available for hemoglobin and allows them to be flexible enough to squeeze through narrow capillaries.

White blood cells, or leukocytes, are part of the immune system and play a crucial role in defending the body against infection and disease. There are several types of white blood cells, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, each with specific functions in identifying and neutralizing pathogens like bacteria and viruses, as well as removing cellular debris.

Platelets, or thrombocytes, are small, irregular-shaped cell fragments that are essential for blood clotting. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets aggregate at the site of injury and release substances that initiate the clotting cascade, forming a clot that stops bleeding.

The continuous production and circulation of these diverse blood cells are vital for maintaining overall health and proper bodily function. Their production rates can be influenced by various physiological conditions and diseases.
